    Detailed description

    St Michael's Mount is a tidal island in Cornwall. The island is home to a small harbour village and is topped by an ancient castle fortress, surrounded by sloping subtropical gardens and sweeping lawns. The island is a civil parish and is linked to the town of Marazion by a causeway of granite setts, passable between mid-tide and low water.

    On the island you can visit the ancient castle, part of which is still home to the St Aubyn family and part of which is open to the public and run by the National Trust. There are also gift shops and cafes to visit around the harbour village along with an accessible exhibition with interesting information and displays about the Mount's history.The gardens are also open from time to time displaying an interesting array of exotic plants and sweeping lawns.

    Parking

    There are 20 clearly marked disabled parking bays in the St Michael’s Mount Visitor and Long Stay Marazion carpark. Blue Badge holders and National Trust Members must pay to park in all car parks.

    There is a public footpath from this car park along the seafront to Marazion beach and the start of the causeway (approx 10 minute walk)

    Toilet facilities

    Ramps are available on request at the entrances to the shop and Sail Loft.

    We have an access toilet situated on the east side of the island, next to the Island Café, and another on the Harbour Front, from where the tram tracks emerge.

    The harbour village and steep castle path are cobbled and uneven and unsuitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs. There is a pushchair park in the Courtyard.

    The island lawn is accessible (during spring/summer) if you’re in a wheelchair. From here you can see the sea, the east wing of the castle and up the cobbled path between the palms, towards the gardens. However, further exploration is very limited because of the steep slopes and steps up to the summit.

    Accessibiliy Guide

    Ancient and rugged, some parts of the island and castle can be very tricky to navigate, especially if you have limited mobility. Paths around the island are steep, cobbled and uneven with no handrails in some places. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to take a wheelchair or pushchair up to the Mount summit and if you are walking, sensible footwear is highly recommended.

    Our Wheelchair Access Vehicle is available for use to provide assisted access to the harbour, village and lawn, but this needs to be booked in advance by emailing tickets@stmichaelsmount.co.uk

    Mobility / Wheelchair Support

    A Wheelchair Access Vehicle is available for use to provide assisted access to the harbour, village and lawn. There is currently one self-drive, single-seat, powered mobility vehicle, available at no cost to the visitor, for use around the village area of St Michael’s Mount. A full demonstration will be given by a trained member of staff. This must be booked in advance, as it is very much in demand. Please call 01736 710265 or email tickets@stmichaelsmount.co.uk to book.

    Please note that it is possible to bring wheelchairs over the cobbled causeway although with great difficulty. Wheelchairs and pushchairs (folded) can be taken on the boats and amphicraft, although access to both the mainland, harbour landing points and amphicraft have steps. When the tide is in, the only access to St Michael’s Mount is by boat during the summer or by amphicraft during the winter opening. We recommend that visitors who may struggle with the boat landings and access onto the boats or amphicraft, plan to visit the Mount when the causeway is open. Causeway opening/closing times are clearly available on the website.

     

    There are scheduled free specialist tours within the village that detail the history of St Michael’s Mount and island life. These are free of charge, take place in the village area of St Michael’s Mount and are step-free making them suitable for wheelchair users and those of limited mobility and those with vision impairment. These take place daily (except Saturday) at 11.30, 13.30 and 14.30.

    It should be noted that the path up to the castle is steep and uneven and made of rocck surface in some places and so may be difficult for individuals with mobility or vision impairment to navigate.

    The café and the restaurant are both accessible for wheelchair users and customers with limited mobility. Ramps are available for wheelchair users.

    Toilets are available at both the east and west side of the village. Both toilet blocks have step-free access and the east toilets have wheelchair access. We also have an additional access toilet on the harbour front. Both access toilets are fitted with emergency pull chords

    Vision Impairment Support

    A clearly worded leaflet is available describing the main facilities, opening times, directions, public transport, cycle routes and parking facilities. The leaflet includes our contact telephone number, email and web address. The leaflet is widely distributed to other tourist venues, hotels, restaurants and Tourist Information Centres in the area. The information is repeated on our website at www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk for those using text to talk software.

    At the Ticket Office, you can ask for magnifying sheets for the partially sighted. There are scheduled free specialist tours within the village that detail the history of St Michael’s Mount and island life. These are free of charge, take place in the village area of St Michael’s Mount and are step-free making them suitable for wheelchair users and those of limited mobility and those with vision impairment. These take place daily (except Saturday) at 11.30, 13.30 and 14.30.

    Hearing Impairment Support

    An Induction Loop is installed at the Ticket Office, the Barge House Visitor Centre and all outlets for the hard of hearing.
