The Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary

The Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary is home to over 100 donkeys and ponies, all rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. The sanctuary is based in beautiful countryside near Penryn and was founded by animal lover Mary Berryman in 1995. Mary sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2008, but her legacy is continued by her daughter Judy Giles and Laurie Stephenson.

Flicka recently celebrated it’s 25th anniversary and staff are in the process of fundraising £300,000 for an on-site equine hospital. The sanctuary is open for visitors every Thursday - Sunday from 11am - 4pm.

Flicka Donkey Sanctuary is free to enter, with donations greatly appreciated. Dogs are also welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. All the staff / volunteers are incredibly friendly and helpful.

Parking

There is plenty of parking on-site, with one disabled bay allocated by the main entrance. There is also a drop off point for wheelchair users by the main gate. An additional overflow car park is available but has a slight gravel flooring.

Mobility

There is access to all areas of the site for visitors with limited mobility. The large, open walkways are concreted which is ideal for wheelchair users. The grass areas are also nicely maintained so this should not be issue - weather/mud depending.

The barns also have level access throughout, with gaps in the barriers enabling you to stroke the donkeys.

Vision and Hearing

Assistance dogs on a lead are welcome. Level access throughout the whole site. The large, open walkways are concerted which allow people plenty of space.

Toilet Facilities

There is a large accessible toilet on-site, with plenty of room to manoeuvre a wheelchair or other mobility aids. Several grab-rail handles are also positioned around the bathroom. The bathroom floor is tiled and has thin mats positioned around the toilet and sink areas.

The Gift Cabin

The gift cabin is allocated to the right of the main entrance, and is easily accessed via a ramp. Although the shop is quite small, it is still possible to move around in a wheelchair.

The Tea Bray’k Cafe

Serving homemade drinks, snacks and cakes, the vegetarian tea room provides a perfect place to rest between donkey visits. The tea room has level access with a beaded curtain to enter. Once inside, there is plenty of room to sit at a table, or alternatively you could use a picnic bench outside. Other seating benches are positioned around the site if you need a mobility break.

Adopting a donkey not only supports the sanctuary, but it also provides a great gift for your loved one. On The Flicka Foundation website each donkey has a story to share. The minimum adoption pack is £30, which includes:
