Kynance Cove is within easy walking distance and the hostel is a good base for walking and birdwatching holidays.

    Detailed description

    This former Victorian hotel is one of the southernmost buildings in England. Its special peninsula location means there are fabulous sea views, beachcombing, walking and - perfect for an activity break in Cornwall or seaside holiday. Kynance Cove is within easy walking distance and the hostel is a good base for walking and birdwatching holidays. The 28 bed hostel aims to cater for the needs of all visitors. There are ground floor bedrooms which are both accessible with accessible en-suite bathrooms.

    This Youth Hostel location boasts beautiful gardens, mostly laid to lawn with tarmac paths. All pointing down toward the sea so there are lovely views and a slope. There are several benches to enjoy the views too.

    If you want to stay YHA Lizard Point, you need to hire the building in its entirety. This means you will have the place to yourself and your whole party. There is an accessible self catering kitchen and dining room in place so you can cook and eat in the comfort of your own space and a spacious lounge where you can all come together to enjoy your time away.

    There is an available hearing loop, brail on the doors and wheel chair access to the ground floor.

    YHA Lizard Point is open to the public from Monday - Sunday, 17:00 - 21:00.

    Parking

    There is parking for up to 10 cars approximately 100 metres from main entrance and one designated bay for blue badge holders. The car park is level and surfaced with tarmac up to the main entrance. Guests can also be dropped off at the hostel entrance. If you contact staff ahead of time they will do their best to provide assistance moving to and from cars.

    Getting to the entrance...

    There are two steps up, with a handrail, to the main entrance, and a manual single leaf door which opens inwards into the entry way. There is then another single leaf door into the entrance hall. Both of the doors are heavy and solid, but staff are happy to help. The flooring here is level and surfaced with lino.
    There is a separate entrance which can be accessed via a concrete ramp. Here there is a wide single leaf door which opens outwards, taking you into the lower dining room. If you contact the venue in advance they can make this entrance available for you. From here there is a ramp up, followed by two single leaf doors to reach the reception area. The reception area has tiled flooring, and is well-lit by ceiling lights.

    Toilet facilities

    There are 3 unisex WCs on the ground floor. One of these is accessible and has grab rails and a low level sink. Transfer is right-handed. This WC has level access from the lower dining room, through two single leaf doors. All WCs have non-slip flooring and are well-lit.

    Bedrooms and Bathrooms
    All rooms without en-suite have a washbasin. Unless otherwise stated, all bedrooms have
    bunk beds and are not en-suite. All bedrooms are carpeted and well-lit with ceiling and
    individual bunk lights. All bedding is provided.
    All of the bathrooms have fluorescent lighting and non-slip flooring. The standard showers
    have a step up to enter.
    Ground Floor
     Two 3-bedded accessible rooms (double with single bunk over) with accessible en-suite
    bathrooms. Transfer onto the WC in these bathrooms is right-handed.
    First Floor
     One 3-bedded room (double with single bunk over)
     Two 4-bedded rooms (one of these has an extra 2 steps up to access it)
     One 5-bedded room (double with single bunk over and a bunk bed)
     One 6-bedded room
     Four WCs and four showers

    All bedrooms are carpeted and well-lit with ceiling and individual bunk lights.
    All of the bathrooms have fluorescent lighting and non-slip flooring. The standard showers have a step up to enter.

    Unfortunately there is no lift at the hostel, so access to the first floor is by stairs only. The stairs are carpeted and there is a banister fitted to one side. This staircase is quite narrow, and has 12 steps to the first floor.

    There is a large garden. Most laid to lawn, and slopes down towards the sea. There are hard tarmac paths across the lawns and down towards the coastal path which also slope.

    Vision Impairment Support

    Braille signs are fitted on room doors and corridor doors.

    Emergency lighting and fire alarms fitted. The Hostels ensure that all guests are evacuated in the event of fire or any emergency requiring evacuation. Arrangements for guests needing assistance to evacuate in case of fire should be discussed beforehand.

    Unfortunately there is no lift at the hostel, so access to the first floor is by stairs only. The stairs are carpeted and there is a banister fitted to one side. This staircase is quite narrow, and has 12 steps to the first floor.

    There is good colour contrast to floor, walls and doorways throughout the building. All
    public areas, halls, stairs and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall
    lights.
