    The Royal Cornwall Museum holds collections of Cornish and European archaeology and social history, as well as world cultures. The fine and decorative art collections hold work by Cornish artists, designers and makers but also contain significant works by nationally and internationally important artists from other parts of the world. The geology. and flora and fauna of the South West of England are represented in the geological and biological collections and are complemented by UK and world material.

    Detailed description

    The museum was founded by The Royal Institution of Cornwall in 1818 to promote excellence in science and art and to forward the world-leading industries that Cornwall was known for. In over 200 years The Royal Institution of Cornwall has established the museum, along with the Courtney Library, and a programme of lectures to further its original aim.

    Our mission is to provide a welcoming, dynamic and lively cultural hub centred around our collections, that inspires people to explore, thrive and have fun.

     

    Admission is £5 (which is an annual pass) and free for under 18s.

     

    The museum holds standing collections relating to Cornwall's mining heritage, Cornwall's history since prehistoric times, Cornwall's wildlife, and treasures discovered in Cornwall. There is also a gallery featuring items from Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.

    There are temporary exhibitions, which change several times during the year, and full details of these can be found on the Museum's website.

    Accessibility

    considerable thought has been given to accessibility, and making the museum welcoming for people with various types of disability. There is a sensory map, showing which areas are dark/well-lit, and which have noisy exhibits, and a comprehensive accessibility guide.

     

    Arts Cafe

    The inviting Arts Café sits between the Royal Cornwall Museum and Truro Arts Company, and offers plenty of seating for your morning coffee, lunch meeting, or afternoon tea.  Fresh, colourful salads, homemade soup, jacket potatoes, quiches sandwiches and toasted paninis are all made to order, using local produce where possible.

    Parking

    There is no guaranteed parking near the museum, as it is on a busy shopping street in the heart of Truro, although blue badge holders may be able to find an on-street parking space if they are lucky. There are several car parks near by, which have Blue Badge parking, and there is a bus stop for Truro's Park and Ride bus immediately outside the Museum's main entrance.

    The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with unisex accessible toilets, ramp and lift, baby changing facilities, shop and cafe.

    Vision Impairment Support
    • Glass doors have visual markings
    • Exhibition text is available for free in large print (16 point) from the admissions desk
    • There is a large print map available on request from reception
    • Some galleries have low lighting
    • Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome. A water bowl is provided on the café terrace.
    • There is an automatic glass door to enter the museum, which is closed which is closed when it is cold. It opens in the middle without being pushed.
