Penlee House
Built in 1865 as a gracious Victorian home, Penlee House has been converted to create a first class gallery and museum set within an attractive park. It specialises in showing the area’s unique cultural heritage incorporating the historic collections of Penzance Town Council, Cornwall Council and Newlyn Art Gallery.

The Galleries
A programme of changing exhibitions celebrates the skill and craftsmanship of painting in west Cornwall in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

The Museum
Founded in 1839, the museum collections cover 6000 years of history in west Cornwall, from Penwith’s awe-inspiring archaeological sites to the area’s more recent social history. The recently refurbished social history gallery houses a wealth of artefacts covering the area’s fascinating and often quirky heritage.

The Orangery Café
Our licensed cafe, with its terrace overlooking the park, offers a range of coffees, afternoon tea with home baked cakes and freshly prepared light lunches, using the best of local produce.

Parking

There are three parking spaces at the back of Penlee House are reserved for disabled badge-holders. Please enter via the Morrab Road entrance (SatNav TR18 4EP)

Toilet facilities

Unisex Accessible Toilet

There is a public toilet for disabled visitors.
 From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access.

The door to the toilet lobby area (image above) is 76 cms wide

There is a folding handrail on the wall to the left of the toilet.

There is an emergency cord to call for assistance

 There is an automatic hand dryer.

Mobility / Wheelchair Support

From Penlee Park there is step-free access, via a ramp, that takes you to the main
entrance of the Gallery. There is level access from the main entrance to:
 The Café and the outdoor seating on the Terrace
 The Gallery shop
 The admissions desk
 All the downstairs galleries
 Unisex Accessible Toilet
 Lift to the upper galleries

Vision Impairment Support

Glass doors have visual markings.
 ‘PenFriend’ audio guides of selected paintings are available to borrow from
the admissions desk.
 Handrails have raised bumps ‘bumpons’ to indicate where they start and
finish. Please note that there are no stair nosings.
 Exhibition text is available for free in large print (16 point) from the
admissions desk.
 Some galleries have low lighting; LED torches are available to borrow from
the admissions desk.

Hearing Impairment Support

There is an induction loop in the café, linked to the PA system, for evening
lectures.

Autism support

There is a Sensory Garden near the main entrance. Its centre piece is a
beautiful copper fountain made by the Copperworks in Newlyn. The beds
have scented plants.
