Mobility / Wheelchair Support

Kresen Kernow is fully wheelchair and pushchair accessible, with lifts to all levels and automatic main entrance doors.

The floor in our reception area is a mix of old granite and new oak, so there are a few slightly uneven areas. There are also a number of dark grey pillars in this area, some of which have large bases at floor level. Two of our rooms have glass walls, with grey motifs on them. We are working on improving the contrast of them.

A wheelchair is available to borrow for your visit, please ask at the reception desk.

Mobility scooters are welcome in the building and parking for them is available between the car park and the level entrance to the building, near the staff door.

Different types of seating are available throughout the building, some chairs with arms, some without, some on wheels and some which are height adjustable. We also have some adjustable height desks in both the Archive and Library.

In the event of a fire, we have two refuge points on the first floor.

Assistance dogs are welcome at Kresen Kernow. There is public space outside the building for exercising  dogs, and we have a spare water bowl and dog poo bags at the reception desk should you need them.

Vision Impairment Support

We have a large print and braille guide to using Kresen Kernow, and voiceovers on our pre-visit and other short films on the Kresen Kernow YouTube channel. Our website is accessible and has a range of settings and variations. We also have magnifiers onsite for some documents, and are often able to create digital copies of items in our collections so they may be accessed on a screen instead of their original format. There are always staff around to help, and on some days we have volunteer computer and family history buddies onsite too (see our website or call us for details).

Hearing Impairment Support

We have hearing loops at our reception and archive room desks, and a portable loop that can be used elsewhere. Our pre-visit film is subtitled and in BSL, and other short films on the Kresen Kernow YouTube channel are subtitled.

Autism support

Our staff are trained in offering additional support for neuro diverse visitors and are aware of things like the Sunflower Scheme. Several of our team are either neuro diverse themselves, or live with neuro diverse people.

Activity levels at Kresen Kernow can vary on a daily basis but we are often quieter first thing or later in the day. Our Kosel room, on the first floor, is available for anyone needing some peace and quiet.

We offer a wide range of learning activities which might affect how busy the building is on a daily basis. All public events are advertised on our What’s on pages. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have a query about visiting on a specific day.

Learning Support

Alongside our pre-visit information which is available in a variety of formats, our website has a number of 'learning from home' activities for all ages and abilities. On site, we offer interactive exhibitions, workshops and activities, also guides and explorer tools designed for different ages and abilities. Some days we have volunteer computer and family history buddies in the library to help anyone less-confident using some of our sources, and some of our team can also use Makaton.
