The entrance doors are wide, with easily navigable thresholds. There is a good contrast in color between the doors and the building's exterior. The doors are full-length glass, with a visible hygiene rating sign, which aids individuals with visual impairments. The entrance provides level access, leading into a spacious reception area that allows for easy wheelchair turning and movement. Staff are exceptionally attentive and proactive in offering assistance. The facility also includes a low-level counter, portable payment terminals, and hearing induction loops for accessibility.
The shop area is thoughtfully arranged, with ample space for manoeuvring. Shelving is positioned at different heights, and staff are available nearby to provide assistance when needed.
The café is located within the entrance area, with level lino flooring. Menus are provided both on each table and behind the counter. Guests can also access the café via the terrace seating area, with double doors leading to the terrace that are 167 cm wide. The café features pedestal tables, allowing for wheelchair access.
Main Building: The doorways are generally wide and easy to navigate. Tables and display heights are suitable for wheelchair users, and there are several sensory-friendly displays, including interactive exhibits. A large portion of the building is fully wheelchair accessible, and the layout allows for easy movement for individuals using walking aids. The app offers audio descriptions, while the easy-read guide on the website helps visitors plan their visit in advance.
The interactive elements, such as the art tables and historical dress-up areas, make the space particularly welcoming for our volunteers with learning differences and sensory needs, ensuring they can engage with the exhibits comfortably.
Glass doors have visual markings.
‘PenFriend’ audio guides of selected paintings are available to borrow from
the admissions desk.
Handrails have raised bumps ‘bumpons’ to indicate where they start and
finish. Please note that there are no stair nosings.
Exhibition text is available for free in large print (16 point) from the
admissions desk.
Some galleries have low lighting; LED torches are available to borrow from
the admissions desk.
There is an induction loop in the café, linked to the PA system, for evening
lectures.
There is a Sensory Garden near the main entrance. Its centre piece is a
beautiful copper fountain made by the Copperworks in Newlyn. The beds
have scented plants.
