Review: Sleeping Beauty at St Ives Guildhall by Miracle Theatre

Our reviewer Eddie went to see Miracle Theatre’s performance of Sleeping Beauty at St Ives Guildhall recently and enjoyed a lively and very accessible performance…

From the outset the team at Miracle Theatre were hugely helpful with our accessibility enquiries when arranging for Eddie, our reviewer to go to see Sleeping Beauty at St Ives Guildhall. There were also clear warnings of flashing lights and loud bangs as well as a guide to the age suitability of the content.

The ground floor of the venue is level and there is access for wheelchairs. There is also an accessible toilet and a low bar. The team here are also on hand to help with any additional enquries.

“I was told that there might be some loud noises during the performance,” says Eddie, “It is always helpful to know if I should expect that. Also there were quieter areas in the hallway to go to if anyone felt overwhelmed.

“The Miracle Theatre team also told me that the do put on some relaxed performances so they can be contacted about this and advise if these are available if you want to see something.

“I was also able to see there was good access for people with mobility problems, including a large accessible toilet. Staff were able to move chairs so people in wheelchairs could sit comfortably next to family and friends.”

St Ives Guildhall can also provide a hearing loop if this is arranged in advance. Regarding discounts, carers go free and you can contact the ticket office with any accessibility enquiries in advance.

“I felt very welcome at the performance,” says Eddie. “It was an unusual re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story, and really funny. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the performance.

It was set in a Holiday Camp in the 1950s’ and there were some interesting characters, including a princess, a goblin, a fairy and a piskie. It was very colourful and the set was really well done.

I had plenty of help and support from the St Ives Guildhall and the Miracle Theatre team. Thank you to them for making this a lovely day out.”
