Take Part in the National Beach Access Survey

Here is Cornwall, we all know how magical it is to spend time at the beach – whether that’s a stroll along the shoreline, a paddle in the waves, or simply sitting and taking in the view. But for many disabled people and those with health conditions, enjoying Britain’s beaches is far from straightforward.

That’s why we’re really pleased to share an important project being led by Will Behenna, founder of the Beach Access Project.

Will grew up in Cornwall and has always loved being on and around the water. After a spinal injury as a teenager left him a wheelchair user, he’s spent years creating ways to stay connected to blue spaces, including launching Inclusive Paddleboarding. Now he’s determined to make sure more people can access beaches and waterways – and he needs your help.

The National Beach Access Survey

Will has launched a national beach access survey, open until 30th September 2025, to gather evidence from people with disabilities and health conditions about their experiences of accessing beaches.

Already over 680 people have taken part – but the goal is to reach at least 1,000 responses. The more voices included, the stronger the case will be for better facilities, clearer guidance, and more inclusive blue space projects across the UK.

By sharing your experience, you’ll help:

  • Highlight the barriers people face when visiting beaches

  • Raise awareness of why accessible facilities matter

  • Showcase examples of good practice

  • Shape future projects and policies to improve beach access

In Will’s own words, this is about “enhancing and improving beach access to enable people with medical and mental health conditions and disabilities to play a meaningful and active role in beach life and blue space.”

Why it matters

We know that spending time near water can boost wellbeing, improve mental health, and create amazing memories with friends and family. But at the moment, too many people are excluded simply because beaches aren’t designed with accessibility in mind – from lack of parking and toilets to difficulties getting onto the sand or into the water safely.

Will’s survey is a big step towards changing that, by building the evidence we need to push for real, practical improvements.

Get involved – become a Beach Access Champion

If you live with a disability or health condition, please consider taking part in the survey and sharing your experiences.
