Most of the outside and car park is undulating but the surface is secure for people with mobility issues and wheelchair users.
The routes around the inside exhibits are clear and easy to follow with lots of high interest displays, although you should be aware that some of the paths inside are very narrow with tight bends. These are ok for people walking without mobility aids but may be too narrow for some wheelchair users.
The outdoors is great, the open doors to the workshops means people can see in and talk to the volunteers. The staff and volunteers are all very helpful and clearly passionate about their work and the subject. The access to the train station itself is over train lines. These are obviously a hazard and a hard one to navigate on an accessibility front,
The train ride is great fun. All the features are explained to you to help keep you safe. These carriages are open top and stepped into. There is work being done to a new carriage to make it wheelchair accessible. Consideration needs to be made as to where the best place is to board the train as a wheelchair user.
The cafe is a very welcoming area, there are ample seats and none of the seating backs onto the main ‘corridor’ through the middle. The tables are a good height. It offers basic food and has a lovely feel. A great place to sit and recoup.The cafe has a ramp and clear access through the middle

There are multiple areas to the museum including outdoor space, barns, workshops and mining displays. Whilst no designated quiet area there are quiet spaces if you need to step out of the busier areas. The train route has a lot of lovely and quirky displays as well as a beautiful view. There is so much to see and listen to, the volunteers are clearly very passionate and extremely helpful.
