Our Accessible Beach Clean & Picnic at Church Cove

Here at Access Cornwall, we had a wonderful day out at our accessible beach clean and picnic at Church Cove, Gunwalloe.

This was our first beach clean with volunteers, made possible by the donation of some litter picking equipment from Clean Cornwall. The equipment provided included extended litter pickers for wheelchair users, trolleys and wheeled bins to help carry our haul and some rollators with seats which allowed those with mobility issues to join us.

Our volunteer uses a rollator at our recent beach clean. She is with another volunteer and one of the Lizard National Trust team.

On the day of the event, we were blessed with great weather, which was much appreciated by our volunteers as we headed out around the dunes and the shore to collect any litter. We were also joined by four team members from Clean Cornwall and Lydia from the Lizard National Trust team. Truthfully, this beautiful beach by the historic and intriguing St Winwaloe Church is very clean, but what we found, was a great deal of microplastic washed up on the shore on the recent tide.

Together we managed to remove as much as possible, helping to ensure that it was removed from the ocean and food chain, where it can harm marine life.

Afterwards we all shared a picnic on the sand by the Church (making sure to recycle and collect all our rubbish of course!). To make a beautiful day even better the fantastic National Trust team donated some very delicious brownies and flapjacks to the picnic, which were much appreciated.

We’re planning more litter pick picnics in the future, all as accessible as possible, so please do keep an eye on our blog, here and on our social media pages if you would like to come along. It’s a great way to get involved in taking care of our environment as well as a chance to meet other like-minded people.

Our team here will do everything possible to make sure that as many people as possible can be included, regardless of access needs.

Thank you again, to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success. Look out for more events like this!
